Accessibility

Children’s Hearings Scotland (CHS) is committed to ensuring that our website is accessible to all of our visitors. Our website has been developed to comply with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0).

Browser Accessibility

Accessibility features on most browsers, such as the ability to change the text size, colour and increase magnification, can be customised to suit the requirements of individual users.

Guidance on modifying browser features to suit individual requirements is available on the websites of individual browser companies.

Further guidance on altering accessibility features is available on My Web, My Way, an online resource created by AbilityNet and the BBC that provides accessibility guidance for all computer users, regardless of ability or disability.

Browser Compatibility

Our website has been tested for compatibility to the following browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 7+
  • Google Chrome (latest version)
  • Firefox (latest version)
  • Mac Safari (latest version)

Colours

The colours used for all text and background colours on the website have been tested for strong colour contrast.

Font and text size

We have selected font and text sizes that are clear and easy to read. Text size can also be adjusted by using the browser controls described below:

Internet Explorer

  • select View to expand the view drop-down menu.
  • select the Text Size option.
  • choose your preferred text size.

Google Chrome

  • select the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  • select Settings.
  • click Show advanced settings.
  • in the Web Content section, use the Font size drop-down menu to adjust text size.

Firefox

  • select View to open the View menu.
  • select the Text Size option.
  • select Increase or Decrease.

Mac Safari

  • select View to open the View menu.
  • select Zoom Text Only if you only want to alter the text size on the web page.
  • select Zoom In or Zoom Out.
  • in older versions of Safari, you need to choose either Make Text Bigger or Make Text Smaller.

Images

Descriptive alternative text has been assigned where appropriate to images, graphics or symbols used on the website. Images that are purely for decorative purposes have been assigned a null alternative text value.

Navigation

We have tried to make the web site as easy to navigate as possible in the following ways:

  • consistent heading structure used throughout the site.
  • search box on the home page.
  • navigation links called ‘breadcrumb trails’ are displayed directly underneath the main navigation bar, helping visitors see where they are on the site.

Language

We aim to use language that conversational, simple and easy to understand. Where jargon, acronyms and abbreviations relating to the Children’s Hearings System are used, we have included their meanings and/or full description in the same sentence.

Publications

Most downloadable documents on our website are Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Files (PDFs).
